Bullies and Warriors

Izzy really listens to the criteria she is given and tries all sorts
of new skills on her Chromebook. She has created her
own images, all of which are relevant.
A great book to read the class is Bullies and          Warriors by Tim Tipene. Especially with                Bullying awareness Week coming up. Room          9 are really enjoying it and have done some          work around the characters and the Warrior          Kids Rules. They created posters that                    contained the rules of Warrior Kids from the          story and a little bit on what the story is                about. They also wrote Personal Responses          to the story.

     Izzy liked that .....

Mark now gets on well with Sean.
Sean didn’t listen to Apihana about fighting Mark.

Caroline is always thinking about how she treats
other people. She has Integrity.
The criteria for being a Warrior Kid

The story made Caroline think about .....

The story made me think about how other children in the World might be bullied.

Telling someone you can trust what is happening

Always being there for someone even when they are out and down(Not like APIHANA!)

Kayci has really applied the story to her own thinking.
She also took a photo of the book cover.

Kayci doesn't like .....
  • Mark was bullying Sean.
  • Apihana said something not nice to Eric and Eric said something not nice back.
  • How Apiana is rude to someone if they say something not nice to sean or do something that hurts sean.

Joyce has used lots of images to create effect.
Can she use these images? Are they credited?
Joyce asked these questions ......

  • Why did Mark decide to be nice to Sean when before he was always bullying him?

  • Could our school get a Warrior Kids class?
  • If we had Warrior Kids at school will lots of people want to sign up?

It made Joyce think about .....

  • If we got a warrior kids class should I go and sign up for it

  • If I got bullied by someone and I had to verse them for a wrestling race would I feel scared?
  • If I went to warrior kids would I enjoy it?

The students also linked the characters in dot to dot connection charts. There were many many links they could make between all the characters, but here are a few. Mark and Eric are the 2 bullies, Sean and Ravanesh and Apihana are good friends but the bullies pick on only Sean.

Then Warrior Kids comes to the school.

Looking Back on the end of Term One.

I have finally had a chance to read some of the ramblings of my students on what they got up to while I was away and thought I would post some on to our class page. It was fun reading back. Now I need to catch up on all the other work they did and saved to their drive files!

Kayci .... Room 9 has had a short week because of Easter. Ms Sands is on a trip to Paris for a marathon so, Miss Ikinofo is going to look after us while she is on her trip. This week with Miss Ikinofo we have been doing drama and learning how to use our body while we are moving. We also got to go to the hall to see a man called Reine, he used to be the ambulance person called Sam on Shortland St, he is also a director. He has a nephew at our school, his name is Joseph but his uncle calls him Jojo.He is Tongan, half Samoan and I think Cook Island. I was so lucky because I got to shake his hand while me and Charlotte were getting the Duffy books from him.

Dora talked about a visitor that came for their Duffy Assembly.
Last week a very talented guy came in to talk to the school about reading I bet you can’t guess who he was? Renee…. I don’t know his last name, is the ambulance driver called Sam in Shortland St. He has also Directed a really famous movie.  He was also a script write, he taught us that we don’t have to be like anybody else. Renee said that as a child he grew up in a poor neighbourhood but he loved to read Roald Dahl books. His fav was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, at the end he handed out the books I got Ransomwood and Jane Eyer!

Izzy wrote about Narrative Writing....
Writing has been very fun so far. We are planning about a narrative that we are going to write. By the way I looooooooooove narratives. People do ones about the family pet being stolen, but I think that is a bit boring.(no offence) So I am writing about a girl called October that, gets arrested for a crime she did not commit. Mine is a mystery story. I enjoy writing emotional mystery stories. It is fun!! By the way I consider mine quite emotional. Wow I just loooooooooooove narratives. I probably already typed that but really, just think about it who cares!  My favorite bit about narrative writing is creating characters and bringing them to life in my story. Narrative=Fun Fun and more Fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Antonio talked about all the activities he was involved in.
Last week on Friday, we did drama and we played some drama games. We had a Duffy assembly and we had a special guest from Shortland Street and his name was Sam. Also  on Thursday, we had a netball session and I did softball training. We had a meeting and our Coach had mentioned that we will be vs other teams in Pool B and they will be very hard, but I know that deep in my heart we will win this Softball match!

Max talked about a huge Working Bee we had the day before I left.
Some of the seniors did a huge clean up of the ‘itchy’ bush that we have at our school. It got so hot and cold, it was strange weather, but it was so worth it as it looks great. Toby, Tiakiwai, Joshua and me made a pathway down the bottom and then we made one more but we didn’t do it right so we had to put all of it back.  It took so long, it took so long I got blisters. When we were done, it looked like we had done nothing, but if you saw how hard we worked then you can comment. This is something we did not want to quit on yet.

Nice work people, you are really enjoying using your chromebooks to write your ideas down. Next to check out those narratives!!

Term Two has arrived!

Well, we are all back in school for the second term, with Ms Sands back from her travels to Europe.
We have a busy term ahead with...... more chromebook learning and starting our own blogs, camp out at Muriwai, a Wheels Day fundraiser, soccer and hockey zones, testing-testing blah blah, a Student Teacher joining us, Running Club starting up, School Production starting up, Art for next terms Art Show created, Leadership and Peer Mediation and Librarian and Back Track commitments, Friendships to build and Integrity to consider.

We are creating the word INTEGRITY for our wall, with our photos montaged onto it.
More pictures of the finished product later. At the moment this is a slideshow of our wonderful members.  goog_1058827143

LAST DAY OF TERM ONE!!
I hope you all enjoy your holidays and really look after your chrome books - you need them next term! Remember to read the class blog and make comments. I might have time to add some things over the holidays. More importantly though get outside and have some fun in the fresh air.
I am in Ireland now and about to start driving all around it. We came across the Irish Sea by ferry from Wales. When in Wales we visited Cardiff Castle. It is an amazing castle. I have so many photos of castles!! During WWII the people of the city would sheltered from the bombs inside the castle walls as they are like long tunnels. The wall goes all the way around and there is a small keep inside and a huge palace as well. Daffodils grow everywhere in Wales and are very beautiful. Whole banks of them lined the rises to the walls inside the castle.

Really looking forward to seeing you all next term. I will do a big slide show about castles for the first week back. If you want something or investigate over the holidays maybe look up either Carcassonne, St Michel, Cardiff, Caen, Dublin or Carnavon.
They do jousting matches at the Cardiff castle!! Imagine dressing up like a knight and riding a horse around a castle playing with swords!!! Fun fun fun. Make sure you have some over the holidays and I'll see you on the first day back!
Warm wishes
Ms Sands

Hi Room 9
Now I am in England I can use the class blog again.. Not sure why I couldn't in France?? Probably just some setting Mr Riceman or James would have known about but no worries I was too busy visiting places and riding the trains. There are soooooo many trains in France. Huge stations and multiple lines everywhere. When they talk to the public over the loud speakers they always play a set piece of music. Always the same everywhere in the country. I can still hear it in my head!!
I have made several slideshows and put them on the Reading page of our class site. There are so many memorials and cemeteries here as so many men died in the two wars. We found the grave site of my great uncle finally after a long day of train, bus and taxi rides. He rests in a very small cemetery in a very small village that not many of the French people even knew about.
Remember to email me.

Hello Room 9
No one has had a go at answering the Integriy questions. Why is that?
I want to see if this is working from France as having problems especially with photos.

INTEGRITY

Across the street from my home three men were washing the office tower windows using harnesses and absailing equipment, it looked fun and scary at the same time.
It made me think about INTEGRITY.    For these men to feel safe, they and other people and the equipment they used all had to have integrity.
What do you think I mean by that?
Why would they need integrity?
Why would other people around them need integrity?
How does equipment have integrity?

As a part of your home learning, or own time learning, this week, discuss these questions with your friends and family and leave a reply that you think helps to answer these questions on this post.

Remember to show your family all the different posts on our class blog.

Reading Activities to Storm Boy by Colin Thiele

After reading the excellent novel Storm Boy by Colin Thiele,  to the whole class they completed a Personal Response form to the story overall.

Max had some great thinking going on and listened carefully.  Love the photo added and the range of good questions.

Caroline found some relevant
information about Colin Thiele's
earlier Life.

Activities of Storm Boy

Storm boy spends his time collecting stuff at the beach. He also helps his friend Fingerbone. He spends his time sometimes alone and does whatever he wants to do. Storm Boy does not like to kill animals because it makes him sad. He like’s to spend his time playing with Mr Percival and his two brothers on the beach underneath the sun.

Cybersmart Lessons

Lots of important tips on how to look after our devices have been learnt and some excellent work has been created with James visiting Room 9.      Time to share.

Izzy is a whizz at getting jobs done and loves working on her Chromebook! She is efficient and totally focused all the time. Joyce is always listening, then problem solving and trying new things.

Caroline great info
The second task saw lots of                                    people manage to change                                              pictures, colours, shapes and                                   icons as well as add important text.

Shahin Najak came and spoke on her adventures for 40 minutes and had the students enthralled. She was easy to understand and funny. The students were asked to write a quick blog about what they had learnt from her and what they thought, on their chromebooks. They had 15 minutes only and did a great job of relaying all sorts of snippets of information.

If you click on each page you hopefully can read their text.

Learning and Leadership and Late Updates!

Well we had the bicycle team in last week, but here are some great shots of us gearing up in our helmets. We had to check each others for size and suitability. It is important your helmet isn't cracked and doesn't wobble on your head.
Then this week we had an orienteering challenge, more swimming, more chromebook learning, the student leaders starting up lunchtime games, creating i-movies about our Syndicate Treaty Rules and a fabulous Community BBQ Picnic on Friday.
Storm helps Sadie

The students wrote a few comments....

School is fun when you do lots of Art, and especially when we get to swim. We have made self portraits. Our class has done orienteering and has done lots of work on our chromebooks. School is fun when you get to hang out with your friends. We’ve also done i-movie acts and sorted ourselves into groups. Zoe

I really like talking with other people and coming up with lots of ideas, and making sure everyone is included in the group, and that we are only talking about what the teacher told us to talk about, not mucking around and doing nothing. Just helping the group come up with ideas. Kayci

I really liked discussing about our i-movie and practising it. It was great fun. I can’t wait to start filming with the ipads. Last week we also did orienteering in the hot sunny afternoon. We started off doing a mini circle of orienteering then we did a huge circle of orienteering. It was so tiring, I could nearly faint. After all of the up and down the hill we finally finished the circle. I took my hat off my sweaty head and I felt the back of my hat, it was soaking wet. At first I thought it was water but then I realised it was sweat. Gosh I’ve been sweating a lot today. After that everybody rushed to the water fountains because we were so tired and thirsty. Then we all sat down and talked about how to really read a map and how to get better at it. Joyce

Today is my first Leadership duty day this is going to be really fun and cool. My partners are Charlotte and Travis. We are going to play Samurai, with Room 3 it is a very fun game the samurai has a squishy noodle and the other people have to get the pegs off the samurai and you have to avoid getting hit by the samurai. The team with the most pegs win. It is a very fun game oh yeah um the samurai has to be blindfolded and has to feel if he is losing a peg! Maanov

Travis and Caroline shared information about themselves on a document. We are all learning lots about the many features in google docs and google drawing.

We  have lots of testing to do this week. This will be very new doing our tests on the chromebooks. But at the end of the week when the sun is shining again, we are off to gorgeous Cornwallis for our School Picnic. My goal this week is to make sure more photos are taken of our activities, especially at the beach.
